I AM PRAYER!
By Crystal G.H. Lowery | Based On Faith
Have you ever walked through a season when it seemed as though everything around you was speaking against what God had promised? Perhaps you have faced accusations, discouragement, opposition, or circumstances that left you feeling weary. You know you need to pray, but if you are honest, even finding the words to pray can feel difficult. What do you do when your circumstances are loud, your heart is heavy, and you simply do not feel like praying?
David gives us a powerful revelation in Psalm 109:4b (TPT): “But I continue to pray.” The footnote brings this verse to life with a remarkable expression of David’s heart: “I am prayer!” What a declaration! David was not merely saying that he prayed; he was declaring something about who he was – his identity! Prayer had become his response, his posture, and his way of standing in the midst of adversity. The footnote captures this beautifully: I will pray until I become prayer itself.
What if we began to see prayer not simply as something we do, but as an expression of WHO WE ARE in Christ? What if, instead of allowing our feelings to determine whether we pray, we began to declare by faith, “I AM PRAYER!”?
When Prayer Becomes Your Response
David knew what it was to face opposition. Psalm 109 describes a season of accusation, hatred, and words spoken against him. Yet David did not allow the actions of others to determine his response. He continued to turn toward God. In the middle of what was happening around him, he remained anchored in the One who heard his prayers.
There will be times when we do not feel strong, when our emotions do not line up with the promises of God, and when the natural circumstances seem to contradict what we believe. But our feelings do not have to dictate our faith-filled response. We can choose to stand on the Word of God even when we must encourage our own souls and bodies to do so. We can open our mouths and declare, “I AM PRAYER!” Not because we feel like praying, but because we have made a decision to turn toward God and trust Him. We have forever settled the issue.
Sometimes we must pray our way through the weariness until our hearts become strengthened in His presence. We pray when the answer seems delayed. We pray when the battle intensifies. We pray when we have not yet seen the manifestation of what we are believing God to do. We continue, not because every moment feels easy, but because our confidence is in the faithfulness of our Father.
David: From Accusation to the Throne
Consider the life of David. In Psalm 109, he was facing false accusations, hatred, and people speaking evil against him. He described those who opposed him as repaying his love with accusations and hatred (Psalm 109:4–5). Yet in the middle of this painful situation, David declared, “But I continue to pray” (Psalm 109:4b, TPT). The footnote, “I am prayer!” reveals the depth of his response. David would not allow the hostility surrounding him to turn his heart away from God. Instead, he turned toward the Lord and made prayer his answer to the battle.
David’s life reminds us that the season in which we find ourselves is not necessarily the final chapter of our story. Long before he sat on the throne, David was anointed by Samuel to be king, yet he endured years of waiting, opposition, and persecution under Saul. There were moments when he had to flee for his life, hide in caves, and trust God without knowing when his circumstances would change. Still, David continued to seek the Lord. He learned to worship in the wilderness, trust God in the waiting, and look to Him as his source of strength. In time, David became king over Israel, just as God had promised (2 Samuel 5:1–5).
David’s story encourages us not to mistake a difficult season for a defeated destiny. We may not be able to change the hearts of those who oppose us, control the timing of God’s promises, or immediately alter the circumstances confronting us. But we can choose our response. We can pray when we are misunderstood, pray when we are waiting, and pray when the way forward is unclear. Like David, we can declare, “I AM PRAYER!” and keep our hearts turned toward the Lord. Our confidence is not that every situation will unfold exactly as we expect, but that God remains faithful as we trust Him through every season.
Speak by Faith, Not by Feelings
There is prophetic power in agreeing with what God says rather than allowing our circumstances to have the final word. Scripture teaches us that life and death are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21). Our words matter. What we continually speak can either reinforce our agreement with fear and defeat or bring our hearts back into alignment with the truth of God’s Word. We can speak God’s Word back to Him and choose instead to agree with God’s Word about the situation instead of agreeing with the situation itself.
This does not mean that we ignore reality or pretend that difficulties do not exist. It means that we refuse to give our difficulties greater authority in our lives than the Word of God. We can acknowledge the battle while declaring our confidence in the One who is with us in it. We can feel weary and still pray. We can face uncertainty and still believe. We can see no visible change and still declare that God is faithful.
When you do not feel like praying, begin by speaking what you know to be true. Declare, “I AM PRAYER! I will not be silenced by discouragement. I will not surrender my confidence because the answer has not yet appeared. I will continue to seek the Lord, stand on His Word, and trust His faithfulness.” Let that declaration become your decision to turn your heart toward Him again and again.
As we speak God’s Word over our lives and circumstances, we remind ourselves of His promises and exercise the authority He has entrusted to us as believers. We cannot control every circumstance, nor can we dictate how or when God will move. But we can choose our response, stand in faith, pray with perseverance, and speak in agreement with His Word. Situations may change as we pray, and even as we wait for change, the Lord strengthens and transforms us.
Become the Prayer You Pray
Perhaps the greatest encouragement in David’s declaration is that prayer does not have to begin with a feeling. It can begin with a decision. You may enter God’s presence feeling overwhelmed, but you do not have to remain there. As you continue to seek Him, meditate on His Word, and trust His promises, your heart is strengthened, your faith is stirred, and your perspective begins to change.
This is an invitation to go deeper. Do not wait until you feel spiritual enough, strong enough, or encouraged enough to pray. Come to the Father just as you are. If all you can begin with is a simple declaration, let it be this: “I AM PRAYER!” Let those words remind you that you are a child of God who can continually turn to Him, trust Him, and stand on His promises.
This month, whatever you may be facing, let prayer become your response. When the enemy brings discouragement, pray. When the answer seems delayed, pray. When you cannot see the way forward, pray. And when you have run out of words, return to the Word of God and let His promises give voice to your faith.
You are not defined by the battle you face or the feelings you experience in the middle of it. You can choose to be steadfast in seeking the Lord, confident in His faithfulness, and unwavering in your trust in Him. Like David, make the declaration that rises above your circumstances: I AM PRAYER!
Keep praying until prayer becomes more than something you do. Let it become your way of life, your first response, and the expression of a heart that continually turns toward God. Let it be your identity in Christ. No matter what comes your way, keep going deeper in Him! Be like David and declare, “I am prayer!”
