Do you have a secret place where you run to hide? A place where you know that you’re safe and loved? A place that isn’t visible to the outside world of burdens, cares, and forces seeking to harm you?
The world can and is often a place that is not a warm and cozy habitation sometimes. We can’t live constantly in the boldness of that uncovering for long without suffering attacks, injury, or some kind of decline in our state.
It’s impossible to live the life God designed for us without a hiding place, a secret place, a refuge. As children, we have probably all built forts and secret hiding places. We make cubby spaces under the bed or in a tree house or with blankets hanging up as walls. The need for a secret place is there not by accident. I believe that there is a need embedded deep within ourselves that has a longing for a secret place. This is a desire that points us toward intimacy with God.
Psalm 91 is all about a secret place that is available to us where we can get away from the harshness of the world, like a baby bird is hidden and protected under the wings and feathers of its mother. We have carved out for us, as children of God, a place so perfect, so wonderfully prepared, and that is just for us to not just camp out, but to dwell in. Obviously, it is more than just a physical place, but a literal spiritual place of real estate that is ours for the taking.
Verse 1 in Psalm 91 says, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” Verse 2 goes on to say, “I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God in Him I will trust.” (NKJV) Scripture tells us that there is already a secret place available to us. We don’t have to build it or construct it. We just have to go and (hopefully) dwell there.
It is no accident or coincidence that verse 1 uses the word “dwell.” That word gives us the connotation of permanence and continuance. There is a difference between camping out somewhere and then moving on versus a place being a permanent residence. We should be dwelling – occupying continually and permanently – this secret place that is already prepared for us.
When we dwell in this wonderful place, we will find protection, peace, love, guidance, wisdom, and intimacy with the One we were created by and for. He is the One with whom our soul loves (Song of Songs 3:4).
If you’ve heard of the wonderful Ten Boom family who lived in Haarlem, Netherlands during World War II, you know that a book that Corrie ten Boom wrote called “The Hiding Place.” It’s about their life during that incomprehensible time of Nazi occupation and their commitment to protecting the life of Jews in need.
I was able to visit the Corrie Ten Boom House where the Ten Boom family lived and see and touch the walls where they lived so courageously. My children went into the actual hiding place which was built in Corrie’s bedroom behind a fake wall. In this secret place, this hiding place is where precious lives were saved.
What a physical literal representation of the promise we have in Psalm 91?!? You have a secret place. Run to it. Dwell in it. Rest in the presence of the Almighty. Take this promise and all the other ones in Psalm 91 and in the Word of God. It’s your inheritance. It belongs to you. Just as those who were hunted and persecuted by the enemy ran to the hiding place in Corrie’s room to be protected and saved, run to THE SECRET PLACE OF THE MOST HIGH and dwell securely there UNDER the shadow of the Almighty.
